Tire, the answer is tire.

She bought the valve caps.

Welcome to the adventure of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! where I unfortunately document the bad luck Mrs McMike has with keeping air in all four of her tires.

Thursday afternoon right as I’m leaving work, she texts me with “I made it to the dentist, but someone didn’t stop in the parking lot, and I had to swerve to miss them. I hit a curb and got a flat. I need a ride home.”

Shit. We’re no stranger to flats with her cars, this one stings a little since !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has 4,600 miles on it. Four thousand, six hundred miles.

Kinja'd!!!

I keep forgetting how much I hate factory jacks. I’m also not sure if I am going to like that oil filter location yet.

Since the dentist’s office was on the way home from work, and she has a spare, I stopped by and changed the tire on my way home.

This was the curb she hit. From what she said, it sounds like someone blew the stop sign to the left, and she sawed at the wheel to avoid them. She didn’t see the island, and hit it close to dead-on, which explains how there is so little curb rash on the wheel.

I was expecting the worst, but the wheel was saved. Might see if I can find some touch-up paint if the rash on the lip still bothers me in a month.

I found a matching OEM tire locally and had it installed that night. I’m hoping we won’t need an alignment, but I’ll take it in anyways and see what it looks like.

We also bought road hazard insurance for the single tire. My fear is that I might not be able to remember which one has the warranty the next time she gets a flat. With all the tires being similar and all, I might get it mixed up.

road hazard coverage ftw! Be careful out there. Curbs really do sneak up sometimes.

I know that feeling. A few months ago my wife picked up a nail and drove on it for 3 miles at 65 mph while dialing me to ask what the TPMS light on the dash and clunking noise meant. Would’ve been patchable if she had pulled right over right away. Another mile and the wheel would’ve been shot, but we got lucky there. We had road hazard insurance, but tread depth was just past the point that Subaru says putting on just one could screw up the AWD system, so we bought the other 3 new tires 30,000 miles earlier than anticipated. We did need an alignment. Make sure to take it in and get it checked after a hit like that. Last thing you need is to replace two tires in 10,000 miles from now because they are wearing uneven.

With 4600 miles on the car, you may have had road hazard on the set that came with the car.

I didn’t even think about that. I’ll need to look at the paperwork that came with it.

And not tell her if I actually find out it had it.

That’s a pretty awful location for an oil filter. Seems almost like it’s the lowest hanging fruit there, and fairly unprotected from road debris.

Thankfully you were able to find a matching OEM locally. As to how to tell which one has road hazard, perhaps you could mark the inside of the tire or wheel with a grease pencil?

The filter seems tucked enough in the wheel well, so I’m not worried about debris. I’m wondering if I’ll be able to get my hand on it without taking the wheel off every time.

Oh, and keeping track of which one will have the warranty is easy.

It will be the one with the puncture.
